Green Card extension: 14 more days of Dutch export insurance, online

Still waiting for registration in Germany or your new home country while your export insurance is about to end? Through our insurance partner we arrange 14 more days of cover with a new Green Card online, subject to the insurer's approval.

  • New Green Card for 14 more days
  • Via WhatsApp, email or the form
  • From €120, price confirmed first

from €120 per 14 days

Your temporary export insurance runs for 14 days, and sometimes things take longer than that. Perhaps you lived in Enschede while studying or working at the University of Twente or Saxion, drove your car to your new home country, and the registration there is dragging on. Or you bought a car in Enschede and are still waiting for an appointment at the registration office in Germany. You can then extend the export insurance by 14 days, with a new Green Card.

We are not an insurer ourselves. The extension runs through our insurance partner and needs the insurer's approval. It all happens online, so there is no need to visit our desk in Hengelo, even if you have already left the country.

What a new Green Card means for you

The Green Card is an international certificate of insurance. Abroad, it shows that the vehicle has at least the third-party liability cover that the country requires by law. Third-party liability (WA in Dutch) covers damage you cause to others with the vehicle, not damage to your own car. For background on the Green Card system, see the Council of Bureaux.

Your current Green Card belongs to your current cover. With an extension you receive a new insurance certificate with a new Green Card for the next 14 days. If you apply in good time, the new cover can follow on from the current one. Read the new card and the policy carefully: they state in which countries and for which driver you are insured. Do not assume this matches your first card, especially if that one was issued elsewhere.

When an extension can help

Typical reasons to keep your cover running:

  • Registration takes longer. In your destination country you are still waiting for an inspection, an appointment at the registration office or documents. In Germany, that office is the Zulassungsstelle.
  • Transport is delayed. The car arrives later than planned.
  • Your buyer needs more time. They are not ready as early as agreed.

How to extend online, step by step

  1. Send your request. By WhatsApp, email or the form at the bottom of this page.
  2. Approval and price. We put your request to the insurer and, once it agrees, confirm the price to you.
  3. Payment. You pay by bank transfer.
  4. New documents by email. We email you the new insurance certificate and Green Card, as a PDF where permitted.

Details we need from you

  • the registration number (kenteken);
  • a photo or PDF of your current Green Card or policy;
  • the end date of your current cover;
  • which country the vehicle is in now, and where it is heading;
  • the details of the policyholder and the driver.

A photo or PDF of your Green Card is easiest to send by WhatsApp or email; you will find both on our contact page.

Insured elsewhere? That is possible too

Were your white plates and insurance arranged by another company? We can still extend your cover by 14 days with follow-on insurance through our insurance partner, again subject to the insurer's approval. Your current Green Card or policy shows us when your cover ends.

What an extension costs

Each 14-day extension costs from €120, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher for a heavy or non-standard vehicle. You always know the price before you pay. Need even more time? You can extend again, each time by 14 days and each time subject to the insurer's approval, which we cannot promise in advance.

Good to know

  • Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • Every extension needs the insurer's approval. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
  • Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. Without valid insurance the vehicle must not be driven.
  • The extension covers the insurance only. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
  • Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is apply. The policy and Green Card state the countries and drivers covered.

What an extension does not do

Please read this carefully if Dutch rules are new to you:

  • Only the insurance is extended, not the export registration. According to the RDW, you may drive on Dutch public roads for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the expiry date of the APK, the Dutch roadworthiness test. The extension does not change that. Our page on Dutch export plates explains this rule.
  • Car still in the Netherlands when the 14 days are up? It then has to travel on a trailer or car transporter.
  • Abroad, the local rules apply. How a Dutch export registration is treated there varies from country to country. Check what applies, for example in Germany, before you drive on after the first 14 days. The RDW points this out (in Dutch) on its page about special registration certificates.
  • Apply on time. Request the extension before your current cover ends. Without valid insurance, the vehicle must not be driven.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new Green Card give me more days on Dutch roads?

No. After deregistration for export you may drive on Dutch public roads for 14 days, and never beyond the APK expiry date. Extending the insurance does not change that. If the vehicle is still in the Netherlands after those 14 days, it can only continue on a trailer or car transporter.

Can I extend a second or third time?

Yes, in steps of 14 days. We ask the insurer for approval again for every extension, and we cannot promise that approval in advance. Send each new request well before the end date.

My export insurance was not arranged with you. Can I still extend it?

Yes. We then arrange follow-on insurance for 14 days through our insurance partner, subject to the insurer's approval. Please send a photo or PDF of your current Green Card or policy.

Do I need to come to the desk in Hengelo?

No. You request the extension online, by WhatsApp, email or the form, also from abroad. The new insurance certificate with Green Card is sent to you by email.

When and how do I pay?

Once the insurer has approved the extension and we have confirmed the price to you. Payment is by bank transfer.
